The Hurricane season will soon be upon us, and with that comes the probability that we could experience tropical storms and hurricanes, all of which require preparedness in order to alleviate perilous problems throughout the season.

Our team of competent Property Managers take the appropriate preventative steps where possible, to reduce or even avoid property owners from being saddled with thousands of dollars in damages should we be affected by such weather systems.

Our PM Team Stays Informed

Dedicated members of the PM team sign up for emergency updates with varying apps and alert the entire team to any warnings that may potentially affect us.

On receiving an alert, the team will advise on the severity of the approaching inclement weather. This allows the other PM team members to make informed decisions concerning their personal safety, the safety of the villa staff and planning for the safety and protection of the properties they manage.

The Meteorological Office usually gives one of these alerts:

Tropical Storm watch or Hurricane watch – the team will monitor alerts, check supplies and top-up any essentials needed in case of a power outage.

Tropical Storm Warning or Hurricane warning – the team will monitor alerts, and heed any warnings for evacuation, especially where guests are on the property.

Our PM Team plans for all eventualities

“There is no excuse for not being properly prepared” especially as we enter the hurricane season. The No.1 priority of the PM’s is to make plans with their families and villa staff as they prepare for all eventualities.

The team will follow these emergency preparedness steps:

    1. Prepare emergency kits for their homes and the properties they manage.
    2. Make preparations for power outages.
    3. Ensure their gas tanks are kept full.
    4. Become familiar with more than one route to the properties they manage.
    5. Provide emergency contact details. This way guests will have a direct contact if there are any issues during the storm or hurricane.
    6. Identify the nearest hurricane shelter and ensure that guests know how to get there in case they need to evacuate.
    7. Advise in-house guests to have a travel bag with essentials prepared in case they need to evacuate. It should be light and easy to carry.
    8. If there are pets, at any property the PM will include them in the hurricane preparedness plans.

Our PM Team will provide basic emergency supplies

The team will ensure each property has the necessary basic emergency supplies. For e.g.

Our PM Team will safeguard the properties we manage

Heavy rain and high winds can cause damage to a property. To alleviate costly damages, Property Managers will take these additional precautions before the storm or hurricane arrives.

    1. Ensure homeowners insurance coverage is up to date.
    2. Protect windows and doors by covering them with plywood or hurricane shutters.
    3. If a property is prone to flood, consider placing sandbags or absorbent flood barriers around your home’s perimeter and doors that are suspect.
    4. Remove and store pool umbrellas to avoid these becoming missiles.
    5. Store lightweight items such as pool toys and patio furniture. Secure any furniture remaining outside that could become missiles in high winds.
    6. Check for loose shutters or screens. Tighten them as needed.
    7. Trim and cut back trees.
    8. Secure any loose wires and cables.
    9. Remove debris from gutters and downpipes.
    10. Inspect roof, and repair loose or damaged shingles.
    11. Test septic pumps and clear exterior drains of debris.
    12. Test generators and ensure adequate supply of fuel available.

As far as we know, it strongly looks like Barbados may be on the green list for international travel. Barbados continues to responsibly emerge from preventative measures to curb the spread of COVID-19. The island has safely reopened bars, restaurants, and even gyms. Beach times have extended, and the warmth of the sun never felt better. With this encouraging news, we’ve seen a surge in interest for Barbados vacation rentals and Barbados vacation packages. We’ve put together a list of amazing beachfront villas in Barbados for those working with a budget. Also, download our “Barbados Holiday Guide & Must-Try List.”

Glitter Bay Barbados

Blue Sky Luxury offers 7 gorgeous beachfront apartments to choose from. The Glitter Bay Estate is the perfect choice for those wishing to experience a vacation that combines the beach and relaxation but remain close to world-class restaurants and shopping centers. Nearby, John Moore’s bar is worth the visit. If you’re lucky, fish and chips will be on sale with the freshest fresh fish on offer, followed by an ice-cold Banks beer available at John Moore’s.

Coral Cove Barbados

Our Coral Cove holiday rental portfolio offers five apartments on the exquisite Paynes Bay Beach. On May 8th, 2021 Barbados will bring into effect a new protocol that allows persons who have been vaccinated free movement in a shorter time than before. What does this mean for visitors? You arrive in Barbados, have your test done, have breakfast, have a dip in the pool, (at your private vacation villa) receive your negative COVID 19 results, and voila, you’re at one of our Top 5 recommended restaurants with hardly any time spent under restrictive movement. Before you get to roaming the Barbados countryside, here are the full details for the new Barbados Travel Protocols for fully vaccinated persons.

What’s a fully vaccinated person?

A fully vaccinated person has been classified by the Barbados Government as having received an approved vaccine in a two-dose regime and has received both doses plus 14 days, or a one-dose regime, one dose plus 14 days. Your vaccination status will be fact-checked by the Barbados Government and persons who do not meet the criteria will fall under the travel protocol for unvaccinated persons. That’s not a terrible thing, it may be a slightly longer wait but the safety of Barbadians and visitors alike has always paramount. However, if you are looking forward to the roaming of said countryside, being fully vaccinated certainly fast tracks you there… ahem, as do our Concierge Can team

How it Works – The New Protocol for Fully Vaccinated Persons

1. Have your vaccination single or double completed + 14 days. Ensure you receive certification from the medical fraternity.

2. Bring to Barbados your PCR test that is negative within the last 72 hours. Ensure you have copies of your certified negative results.

3. Within 24 hours of arrival in Barbados, you will take a rapid test or a classic PCR test. After this, you will have limited movements. (Government has put new measures into place to handle high volumes)

4. Receive negative results of your COVID 19 test and restaurants and roaming will be open to you asap.

How Can we at Blue Sky Luxury Help?

Protocols are constantly changing; Barbados has been quite forward-thinking in ways to operate safely while placing the value of lives at the forefront. Our Concierge Can team can help you:

· Secure your PCR appointment with an approved medical practitioner

· Arrange for the medical practitioner to test you privately at your villa

Volcanic ash consists of fragments of rock, minerals, and volcanic glass, created during volcanic eruptions. Once in the air, the ash is transported by wind up to thousands of kilometers away.

Outdoor activity should therefore be minimized, as exposure to ash can be harmful to your health, particularly the respiratory tract. Persons are therefore advised to stay indoors where possible.

This blog looks briefly at the impact on human health, infrastructure – namely pools & pool equipment, irrigation systems, landscape lights and buildings and seeks to provide tips on general safety and clean up.

Human Health

Volcanic Ash particles can be so fine that they are breathed deep into the lungs. With high exposure, individuals may experience chest discomfort and nasal irritation. Persons should limit their exposure to ash fall and use a mask to reduce inhalation of the volcanic ash.

Pools & Pool Equipment

Billows of Volcanic Ash in the air will result in ash settling on pool floors and suspending silt/mud in the water. It is not necessary for pools to be drained, water is a precious commodity. In addition, only cover pools with tarpaulins if they can be properly secured and removed without the contents on the tarps entering the pools. When the ash abates, your pool company will clean the water of the silt/mud and vacuum the ash from the floor. Pump seals, cartridge/sand filters, ball valves and cartridge filter O-rings should all be checked for damage.

Irrigation Systems

Volcanic ash will need to be cleaned from valve boxes. Pop-up sprinklers may sustain some damage due to the abrasiveness of the ash, causing water to leak around the shaft or for them not to pop-up or retract. Micro sprinklers may also be clogged or not perform correctly. Irrigation controllers, outdoor and submersible pumps and filters should be inspected for dust.

Landscape Lights

Volcanic ash accumulation will most likely block the beam in up-lights but can easily be cleaned with a lens cleaner. Ash fall on transformers can be swept with a hand brush.

Buildings

Gutters and trench drains need to be cleaned as the slope of the gutters and drains do not allow the ash to run off and the weight of the wet ash will put undue strain on the gutter bracket. To clean the roof, use a shovel to scrape ash off, especially if you’re working with a thick layer. Exercise caution when working on roofs as ash is slippery.

General Cleaning of Volcanic Ash

Lightly dampen the ash to prevent it from billowing and sweep it up before rain, if possible. Remember that ash particles have sharp broken edges, making them very abrasive material.

To end on a positive note, volcanic ash often contains minerals that are beneficial to plants, and if it is very fine, it can break down quickly and fertilize the soil.

09th April 2021

Dear Friends,

A little good news on the situation in Barbados! Last night the Prime Minister announced further relaxation on restrictions in Barbados that will come into effect 11 April 2021 through April 26. The beach is back! We have yet to receive the final directive but a summary of the changes are as follows:

1. No curfew from Monday to Wednesday.

2. Curfew from 11pm to 5am Thursday to Sunday.

3. Beaches and parks will now be open 5am to 7pm for recreation, with the provision that no picnics, parties or large gatherings will be permitted.

4. Small pleasure craft may resume operation at 50% capacity, but no larger party boats may operate.

5. Watersports operators may resume operations.

6. Bars can open at half capacity, but cinemas and night clubs must remain closed.

7. Gyms are permitted to reopen.

8. Fast food restaurants can resume inside dining with social distancing and strict protocols.

9. Church capacity is now limited to the number that allows for 6-foot distance being maintained between worshippers.

10. Funerals and weddings may now have 100 persons in attendance, however any receptions may only be in the form of meals and no parties at this time.

11. Retail stores and supermarkets will remain closed on Sundays.

With the lifting of restrictions it means your guests can resume the enjoyment of the majority of what the island has to offer, provided that protocols are adhered to. Mask wearing in public remains in force.

New Protocol for Entry to Barbados for Vaccinated Persons
While the entry protocol for unvaccinated persons remains as it has been since 3 February 2021, effective 8 May 2021 a new protocol for vaccinated persons to enter Barbados will be in place. A vaccinated person is defined as a person who in a two-dose regime has received both doses plus 14 days (meaning their second or final dose has to have been given no less than 14 days prior to arrival in Barbados). Such persons will still require a negative PCR test within 72 hours of arrival, and will be retested on arrival in Barbados. This retest will either be a classic PCR test or a rapid PCR test. Once that test is negative, persons will be free to move around Barbados freely. This means only a 24 to 48 hour quarantine period or even less depending on turnaround time of results.

While it was not announced in detail last night, we participated in a meeting with the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association and it was clarified and recognized that since children under 18 are not presently being vaccinated in most countries, that the protocol that applies to the parents accompanying their children will also apply to their children.

The Ministry of Health will continue to monitor and make adjustments based on the circumstances and the level of vaccination reached in the Barbadian population. For full details as released please check the Barbados Travel Protocols website where we expect the protocol to be released shortly.

COVID-19 Case Update:
This week, for the first time since 31 Dec 2020, the active case count in Barbados has dipped below 100 persons. New cases have mostly been in the single digits for the past week, or largely below 2% positivity rate, which is a significant improvement.

Vaccination Roll Out
This week Barbados received its first tranche of vaccines from the COVAX facility to add an additional 33,000 doses available for the vaccination program. The distribution of these doses will commence this week to add to the over 63,000 persons already having received their first doses. Second doses will also commence distribution later this month.

We will continue to keep you updated on the situation in Barbados and hope that you are all staying safe. We do hope with the improving situation locally, and the potential for a resumption of travel from the UK and Canada in May that we can hopefully look forward to a more positive summer! If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

Kind regards,

Tania Wallace
