St. Lucia Jazz

St. Lucia’s Jazz and Arts Festival has become the Flagship event on the island’s Events Calendar (http://www.stluciajazz.org/). The twelve day festival is scheduled for April 30 – May 11, 2014.  This world-class event brings top entertainers and performers from around the world to St. Lucia. It has built a reputation of being the premier music festival in the Caribbean that can stand up to the best musical events throughout the world. Multiple shows and venues are offered with all genres of music like Jazz, Rhythm and Blues, Reggae, fusion and new age sounds!

2014 marks its 23rd year, which in itself speaks to the solid foundation that the festival has, in a time when most music festivals die off after about seven years. This year’s festival is shaping up to be another stellar line up! “Main Stage” activities at the Pigeon Island National Landmark will sound off on Friday, May 09. Themed as Caribbean night, the evening extravaganza will see performances from Trinidadian string band Alternative Quartet, local heartthrob Teddyson John featuring Alison Hinds and Jamaican reggae and dancehall legend Barrington Levy.

Saturday May 10 features American R&B soul singer, songwriter and producer Kem, American-born Puerto Rican Grammy and Latin Grammy Award winning Merengue singer Elvis Crespo. His smash hit ‘Suavemente’ has become an anthem for Latin music. “Personally” sealing off the Saturday line-up is Nigerian R&B duo P Square.

Headlining the St. Lucia Jazz and Arts Festival isAmerican singer-songwriter, record producer and multi-instrumentalist Maxwell. Boasting several chart toppers, the Grammy award-winning artiste music spans R&B, Funk, Jazz and Soul.  Festival patrons will dance and sing along to legendary American funk/soul band of Motown fame, The Commodores. The group is best known for their ballads, such as “Easy” and “Three Times a Lady“, but has recorded funky driven dance-floor hits which include “Brick House“, “The Bump”, “Fancy Dancer”, and “Too Hot ta Trot”.

Also on the cards for Sunday May 11 is Jamaican reggae fusion recording artist, best known for winning Season 5 of the American reality TV singing competition, The Voice – Tessanne Chin. Other musical virtuosos forming the 2014 line up include Jamaican pianist Monty Alexander, St. Lucian Expo that features the up and coming emerging talents of Michael Robinson and Anesha Antoine, and funky jazz & blues band Blue Mango featuring Emiline Michel & James Germain.

With a Line up like that there is no doubt that St. Lucia is the place to be in May!
