Crop Over Festivities

Coming around summer time, you’ll invariably hear talk about the Crop Over season. It’s a centuries-old tradition that runs from June, culminating with Kadooment Day, a colourful street party on the first Monday in August. It’s that period on the Barbadian calendar when our culture is at its most vibrant, the island is its liveliest and the parties are rocking the hardest! Join the fun by going to one or two (or all!)

The number of premium Crop Over events has multiplied over the years, so that the festival is no longer just for the young, but for the young at heart. The big ticket events attract a local and international crowd and tickets go in a hurry, so do speak to your concierge in advance. Also, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the odd celebrity who usually makes his/her way to these parties…last year, Will Smith and Lewis Hamilton were in the crowd and it is Rihanna’s favourite time of year to come home!

Ultra-premium parties have become somewhat of a norm during this time of the year and there are a few that the who’s who will flock to- and for good reason! The open bars serving your most-loved drinks and inventive cocktails, yummy munchies and pumping music will guarantee you a time like no other. We are particularly looking forward to Crop Over staple, Bliss, as well as the new but very promising Mimosa (and you should be too).  And don’t sweat about getting to and from the venue- our concierge can easily arrange a driver beforehand.

The Rest of the Year

But all this isn’t to say that Crop Over is the only time to visit with partying in mind.  There is bound to be something happening every evening all year-round – we are a festive people, after all. A big fan of the theatre or dance? Go to a dinner show- and look out for the Caribbean twist! Craving some live music? Ask your concierge about the acoustic nights many of the beach bars and restaurants around the island set up weekly. Whether you’re after chic or casual, finding a place to have that well-deserved sundowner (or two) is as easy as it gets.

Host your own party

And if you want something put together that’s slightly more intimate for your closer pals, that’s not a problem either. Just to give you an idea, one of our summer guests from last year who visited with his friends for his bachelor’s party had us organise a rum shop crawl around the island! And with an estimated 1,000 rum shops islandwide, that’s definitely something that will never get old.  We also hosted a Texas Hold’em tournament for 20 guests at one of our larger villas – that was a night to remember! For something less on the…wild side, a private catamaran cruise is always a crowd-pleaser. You can even ring in your birthday, engagement party or any other occasion at your villa itself- whether you’re looking for a fireworks display on the beach or a jazz band to perform at your dinner party, we have done it all. Just give us the size of the party and the theme and we’ll take care of every detail to make your friends getting soaked back at home even more jealous.

Next up…

Although we’re not sure whether the number of eateries on the island surpasses the number of rum shops, that won’t matter too much. We promise you that some of them are so good that you won’t mind visiting the same ones over and over again. So just to whet your appetite, our next entry is dedicated to the multitude of great and varied food options on the island. Stay tuned!
