Holetown Festival climaxed this weekend with a street fair and parade. Hundreds of locals and tourists descended on Holetown to take in the sights and sounds of this St. James festival.
The Holetown Festival commemorates the anniversary of the first settlement of Barbados at Holetown in February 1627. This weeklong festival, which began on February 10th with the grand opening at the Holetown Monument, also included historical lectures, a beauty pageant, exhibitions, concerts, a street carnival and a floodlit tattoo. Now in its 37th year, the Holetown Festival is always something to look forward to on the calendar.
Several booths lined the streets in Holetown on Saturday; with some vendors selling local crafts and others selling locally made products such as jams and jellies. Tourists and locals had the opportunity to try some ‘Bajan’ delicacies such as fishcakes, hamburgers, snow cones and natural juices were on sale. There were also several activities and treats for the kids including jumping tents and rides.
A number of schools and youth groups put on a show that was a mix of Barbadian culture at its best. Routines depicting the Barbados Landship and the traditional ‘Tuk Band’ were definitely well received. There was also a vintage car parade that created quite a buzz. These cars were quite impressive to onlookers who were amazed at the mint condition of these machines. Our very own Andrew Mallalieu took part in this parade, showcasing a fire red vintage vehicle. The Mallalieu Motor collection had 6 restored cars on show on that day.
